A solitary walk and experimental transmission

An interactive “labyrinth” - more delightful and exploratory than deliberative. The hope is to slowly remind the participant of the elements outside our daily events, of the things that are easy to forget - illogical things, impractical things. The intention is to induce participants to become open to these quiet, hidden parts of their surroundings."
The foundational inspiration for this piece comes from research on the history of a neighborhood that borders Brooklyn and Queens in NYC. I came upon the idea for the structure of the piece and its respective sounds after a walk in one of my favorite locations, when I discovered many old trees uprooted by an intense storm that happened the previous night.
The area is composed of a miles-long cluster of connected cemeteries, all quite high in comparison to Manhattan, allowing for a feeling of a broad horizon.
There were many old, semi-abandoned areas of these public spaces with knotted pear trees, flowering vines, and very, very old cypress.

The Fells is a multimedia piece created with video, field recordings and self-made instruments. Recordings were gathered from contrasting urban and rural environments. The urban sounds include recordings of freight trains on a former commuter railway line, traveling in the early morning and late at night, as well as recordings of water in decaying concrete and piping within the railway overpass structures after excessive rainfall. The rural recordings include sounds of water traveling through the Fells forest outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Recent flooding and construction around the natural landscape created many new bodies of still and running water.

Additionally, crystal glasses, singing bowls, contact microphones, and bowed instruments were used for compositions in the studio. A video was made featuring locations of the field recordings mixed into video collage.

For the Bike Box performance, site specific audio was transmitted by an iPhone application developed by David Gagnon. While biking through central Brooklyn, participants were able to listen to pieces geographically tagged to their location, and in turn, transmit the recordings back to the gallery for live remixing. The Bike Box project was developed by Sabine Gruffant and Bill Brown.

For the Dragonfly Festival, the composition was installed in a wooded area used as a temporary Soundfjord gallery space outside the main festival stage.

Real and Imaginary Places

Real and Imaginary Places addresses how space and location affect cumulative sensory experiences and memory.
The ongoing series is built off of environmental recordings from multiple locations over several years.
The virtual sonic landscape is participatory and includes recordings requested by the artist on specific themes.

How we respond to a place is influenced by our interaction with it. For example, is the environment perceived as pleasant or distracting, are we alone in the space or is it shared with others (can someone see/hear me), how do we move through the space? In effect, our response to a setting is often brought about through action, projection, rejection, and fabrication, creating the place we experience. This project refers to such a place as a self-inflicted environment. Responder is a site-specific sound work designed for a mapped area of the Palo Alto Bayshore Preserve. Participants are guided on a walk along a T-shaped pathway adjacent to Highway 101 and between Egret and Hawk Lake. The footpath is lined with reeds and has a rare open and low horizon. Highway 101 creates a distinct sound wall between the synthetic natural environment and intersecting, human-made line-of-noise produced from oscillating traffic patterns. Participants are led along the footpath to experience a homogenization of the artist’s self-inflicted environment simultaneously with their own.

Cathleen Grado is an interdisciplinary artist whose work addresses sound, memory and absence/presence in real and imagined spaces. Her work uses in-person field recordings and remote acoustic monitoring to inform the composition of spatial installations and virtual sound environments.
She holds a B.F.A in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and an M.F.A in Media Study from the University at Buffalo SUNY, where she studied with Tony Conrnad, Cort Lippe, Reinhard Reitzenstein and Mark Shepard.
